Swinerton is providing general contracting services on the new three-story 104,000 square-foot cancer center located on a 6.5-acre greenfield site in east Chico’s Meriam Park Development.

The Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center includes advanced oncology treatment spaces with two Varian Edge and one Varian Halcyon linear accelerator units with IDENTIFY surface-guided radiotherapy systems each housed in concrete vaults with walls and ceilings up to seven feet thick. The oncology department also includes a Siemens CT/Simulation imaging room, exam and dressing rooms, and all associated staff and physician support spaces. Other areas of the first floor include blood draw and lab spaces including blood analyzers, along with community, staff, conference, and education spaces. The second-floor clinic space features 54 exam rooms including nine for procedures and dermatology. The vast open space on the third floor includes 48 infusion bays, hazardous and non-hazardous compounding pharmacy spaces, and roof decks.

This state-of-the-art facility is designed to transform healthcare in the region for generations, offering a patient-centered environment enriched by high-end finishes, biophilic design elements, abundant natural light, soaring ceilings that create spacious interiors, and expansive curtainwalls with protected deck areas that foster a strong connection to the outdoors—all guided by the latest innovations in cancer treatment design and care strategies.

The project is being delivered through a collaborative project delivery method developed by program manager Covalus. Furthermore, Swinerton is self-performing major scopes of work, including structural concrete, interior and exterior framing and drywall, and casework.
